One major product I can recommend is Ultrech’s Professional Gesso. It is not runny and can be scooped out with a spatula! I coat all of my paper and canvas’ prior to painting because I do not want the paint I apply to absorb or spread. I have also gesso’ed over paintings I have not been very please with and covered, carved out, sanded and scratched out amazing texture allowing the under painting to show through with surprising effects.
Check out Utrecht Studio Series Acrylic Gesso. I get the white, light bodied and by the gallon. Works adheres well to canvas, paper, board, wood, plaster and stone! It’s economical (we artists like that!) and great for high volume use… and it is archival. This Studio Series gesso provides a slight tooth surface that can be sanded to a smooth finish or take a beating like I give it!
I highly recommend. I have used this gesso on every one of my paintings.
